EC emphasises need to add election studies to school syllabus

Srilanka, May 1 — The Election Commission (EC) has taken steps to initiate negotiations with the Education Ministry in order to add studies on elections to the school curriculum.

This initiative by the Election Commission is made in a bid to boost political literacy among the public starting with schoolchildren.

Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said that plans are afoot to include election studies in the Grade 8 syllabus.

The Elections Commissioner General further pointed out the need for political literacy to be provided through formal education, due to the lack of adequate focus on civil rights and responsibilities in the Government education system.

Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake made these statements on Tuesday (29), while addressing a special seminar on the theme ‘Political Literacy in Sri Lanka and its Impact on Local Government Elections’ that was organised by the Sri Lanka Press Association and the Election Commission.
