SIAM closes after busy final day as visitors praise event, raise concerns about infrastructure

The International Agricultural Show of Morocco (SIAM) wrapped up Sunday after a busy final day marked by large crowds, brisk sales, and overall positive reviews, although visitors voiced concerns about Meknes’ ability to support an event of this magnitude.

Hundreds of attendees flocked to the fairgrounds for last-minute purchases and to attend the closing ceremonies. Despite the high turnout, logistical challenges overshadowed the otherwise successful event.

One visitor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it was his second time attending SIAM. Living abroad, his trip to Morocco coincided with the show.

“Not much has changed since my last experience,” he said. While some have called for relocating SIAM due to Meknes’ limited infrastructure, he believes the event should remain in the city. “There aren’t many major activities in Meknes. I come mostly for the local products showcased here.”

Fatima Zahra Moutawakil Amani, also attending for the second time after a 10-year gap, noticed some improvements.

“The organization has gotten better, and the fair has grown bigger,” she said. Amani said she mainly came to purchase locally made cosmetics. “I trust our cooperatives. This is a great opportunity to find products that aren’t available in Rabat,” she added.

Exhibitors also reported strong sales. Fatima Ait Mhend, who sold traditional spices and herbal products, expressed satisfaction with visitor engagement.

“I sold more than I expected,” she said. “Visitors were genuinely curious, asking about the origins and production of the goods, not just the prices.”

Still, issues outside the fairgrounds drew criticism. Parking shortages, traffic congestion, and limited hotel availability made it difficult for visitors traveling from other cities.

“Finding a place to park was a nightmare,” said Karim Bali, who drove from Rabat. “We had to park far away and walk a long distance under the sun. For an international event like this, Meknes needs better infrastructure.”

Public transportation challenges also surfaced. “It’s really complicated if you don’t have a car,” said Leila Abrich, a university student from Fez. “Taxis and buses are not easily accessible near the fair.”

Despite the frustrations, many attendees said they plan to return.

“It’s still the best place to discover what’s new in Moroccan agriculture,” said Omar Kerboubi, a young farmer from Taza. “But something needs to change outside the gates.”
